There are few new homes being built in the Silicon Valley on virgin, empty lots. Most had an existing, old home, that was demolished to make way for the new. But by retaining enough of the existing structure, the project qualifies as a remodel rather than new construction in the eyes of the building department. We take this approach whenever we can for three key reasons:
For this particular home “remodel”, we preserved a significant portion of the existing foundation. From there, we demolished everything above ground, added 700 square feet to the main floor, and expanded the upper floor by 300 square feet.
